Example: A Lead Ploughing the Furrow

  • Leader will recite (three dots means taking three deep breaths to give people time to visualize), a drummer will beat time with her drum if you have a drummer available. Leader 2 will demonstrate the step and get everyone following her and in sync. The steps are a typical ploughing step: a step with one foot, drag the other to the first foot, and a clap or a slap to the thighs.

  • Hand out some sticks and tell the folks that if they cannot, or choose not to, walk they can pound the earth in time with the drums (or drum if they wish) and help with the working in that way.

Leader:

Breathe deeply as you walk ‘round the grove and past the god pole …

breathe with each other …

breathe with the forest …

Be aware of your feet as they make contact with the ground,

the pattern and rhythm of their step,

the sound and vibration of the others footsteps …

Drag your feet, plough the furrow …

Listen for the trees, the wind, the drumming,

the clapping of your hands …

Smell the fire, the incense, the candles,

the clean country air …

Feast your eyes on the beauty of nature and drink it in …

Breathe deeply, breathe with the land …

Each time you take in the Air

you are taking a breath with the very Earth

and the whole system itself …

The wind that moves the air,

the other species that breathe the same air as we do …

We are all a tiny piece in that greater whole …

We are all connected to the universe around us,

for we are part of it …

Now, reach out with your heart, your mind and spirit

deep, deep down into the Earth, into the land below you …

connect with it as best you can …

As you drag your foot feel the resistance,

feel the heartbeat of the land in the soles of your feet …

with each beat of the life-pulse of the land,

you feel yourself sinking into the ground, the heartbeat drawing your spirit down …

your feet sliding just a little deeper with each step, with each breath, with each heartbeat …

All lands are one land …

This grove is connected with all lands,

deep down beneath mountain and sea …

Through the thinning Veil this grove

is also connected with every sacred grove,

every holy well, every humble shrine, throughout time and space …

this land is connected with the ancestral lands …

Slowly, with each step, you bring this grove, and all of us, a little deeper …

we connect a little more with the mythic landscape …

There is a furrow, as if from a plow, or a small ditch, being dug with your steps and the steps of the others …

The deeper you dig this furrow

the deeper we sink into the Mythic Landscape …

Where the worlds converge, where time stands still, where the many worlds all meet …

Feel yourself sinking into the ground to about knee-deep …

perhaps it feels as though you are wading through water

or pushing through thick underbrush …

the heart beat of the land growing stronger and stronger …

feel it in your feet and legs,

feel it match the rhythm of your own heart …

Breathe deeply …

Deep, deep down is a wellspring of energy,

a wellspring of the Earth’s life force,

feel yourself dip your toes into this power …

and then pass beyond it, beyond this middle realm …

[intensely] pass through Midgard …

It may be getting harder to walk, keep pushing, keep digging …

we circle round we spiral into, and then through, the Veil …

The river of blood, the river of memory, where the wisdom of our ancestors flows from, is just beyond reach …

dig a little deeper …

the river of memory flows up from the underworld and into the furrow …

Here we create a gap in the Hedge, a thinning in the Veil.

A place that is no place, a moment that is timeless.

A threshold at the edge of everything, a gate between all things.

Here we stand upon the ninth wave …

Let the worlds meet.

Let the Veil be parted.

Let this place be filled with the mists of time and space …

We cross the shoreline to meet with the spirits of place, of nature.

To meet with the gods and ancestors on their ground, in their realm …

Now turn your hearts and minds inwards,

drawing the energies of this place, and of the land,

gently and slowly into the centre of this grove …

Now begin slowing, slowing …

and gently stopping …

now turn so that you face outwards …

Slowly and completely fill your lungs …

and then slowly and completely empty them…

Allow the power move up through and around your body …

feel it filling the furrow you dug around the grove,

filling it like sunlight, like moonlight

And like water, it laps against your shins …

Breathe slowly and deeply and let this happen for a time…[long pause]

The river of power flows from the furrows and fills this place …

See and feel the river from between the worlds, from beyond death, from beyond time, rising up into the land and the forest, and eventually settling.

Breathe deeply …

[shouting] The witchring is sained with smoke, marked are the Crossroads, raised is the Hedge, and the Furrow ploughed.

Be ye cast, be ye bound, hallowed be o’ compass round!!!!

[not shouting] Take your time to settle in, to acclimatize, sit if you need to.[long pause]

The Return

Leader: ”We must now make the journey back to the mundane. On our feet again, if you can. If not then you can assist with clapping, drumming and gently tapping the ground with your stick. We must circle round once more. We will now walk the witchring Sunwise for this.”

Step high and lightly, as if climbing stairs or going up a slope …

Slowly and completely fill your lungs …

and then slowly and completely empty them

as you walk ‘round the grove …

Listen and feel for your heartbeat …

Feel the heartbeat of the Land move through your body …

Breathe with each other, breathe with the forest …

As you move around the witchring,

feel yourself back within that furrow,

that ditch filled with power …

Breathe deeply …

Step high and climb, climb, climb …

With each step, you feel your self rising a little more …

and the power draining away back into the land …

The forest begins to feel normal again, as the river drains away …

Slowly you rise spiral upwards …

out of the Mythic Landscape

and ever back to wards an ordinary reality …

Climb, circle us back to Midgard …

Feel yourself rise back out of the furrow completely …

return us to the middle world…

let the grove, the witchring circle back up into the mundane world …

leave behind the river of blood …

rise up through the Veil …

feel the last of the power,

the energy seep back down from whence it came …

It goes down deeper and deeper, as you rise higher and higher …

feel the heartbeat of the land slowly move away,

deeper into the Earth …

Now begin slowing, slowing …

and gently stopping …

Turn so that you face outwards

and take one big step backwards, inwards …

Breathe deeply …

sit, crouch or lay down

in a way that you can make as much contact with the land

as possible …”

Example: Compass Rose/Sacred Landscape

“I invoke the knolls to the North, that guard the entrance to this land

I invoke the Name-sakes

Upon the Seat of Ravens

Upon the signs that guided the Folk, when first we sought the sacred places.

Be for us guardians and waypoints

Help us find the roads we seek,

and guide us safely home again.

Hail the Knolls!”

“I invoke the wetlands to the East

I invoke the fragile, liminal space

The bridge between earth and water

That shelters sacred creatures

And hides secrets of its own.

Be for us a guide on uncertain, twisting paths

Help us understand the treacherous ways of bog and mist

Teach us to walk on trackless ways, unerring.

Hail the Swamp!

“I invoke our folk fire to the South-East

I invoke the hearth fire that we left burning behind us

To the bonds forged in frith, and laughter and speech

To the safe place, that keeps back the night

Be for us a memory, and an anchor to hold in our hearts

Though we fare forth into dark places

Help us remember that there is safety at our backs

Help us hold to our courage.

Hail the Fire!

“I invoke the Sacred Well to the North-West

I invoke the Land-Heart

To the place of sacrifice

To the entrance of the Underworld.

Be for us a gate, a portal

A way between

And although it is all too easy to slip beneath your waters

Grant us also passage back to Midgard

When we journey back again.

Hail the Well!

“I invoke the dusky skies above us

I invoke the cool promise of night air,

To the ever-wandering clouds

And the timeless, steadfast stars

Be for us a reminder of the vastness of universe

Help us understand that we are but tiny, fleeting sparks

in an eternal, shoreless night.

Help us to remember that we are fragile, and fallible.

Hail the night!

“I invoke very heart of the Land

I invoke the spirit of the place called Raven’s Knoll

To this land that is old as time

But is still as fresh and new to us as the first blossoms of spring

Fear us not, for we come in friendship

Though our efforts may be at times imperfect

Help us learn your wild ways

That we may heal each other of our hurts.

Hail to Raven’s Knoll!

“Here I lay the Compass Rose

Here I mark the sacred landscape that surrounds us

Way posts and trackways to guide us there and back again

Here, where we will find the crossroads

Here, where the worlds shall meet

Within and without, above and below

Drawn into the centre

Where the needfire binds them

Hail the crossroads!
