Lighting Candles in the Snow

Lighting candles in the snow
Lay them upon a frozen crust
Row and row, circles in circles

White powder lit by scared fire
Warming flame and freezing dust
A golden glow upon the snow

Gold like Dawn’s promising hope
Flickering flame of bloody red
Reminds us of ancestral dead

Leaf litter buried under ice and snow
Lost leaves wearing the burning colors
Of fire now dancing on candlesticks

Darkness comes to glowing snow
Banished a little by burning wicks
Warm in heart but glad of cold

Frozen now by Earth’s flowing tides
Farewell Sun, candles and I will wait
Farewell Sun, we will light your way

See Light again on Midwinter day
For today the Dark is here to stay
