Building a Better Meme

(I’ll post answers my answers in a little while)

Please describe briefly your Path:

Please describe briefly how you practice it:

When did you first commit to your Path?

How is your practice different now than it was then?

Is your practice different today than how you thought it would be back then?

Does your Path and core belief system differ now than how it was when you first started?

What is your heritage and how does this inform your Path?

What are your main influences for your Path?

Which do you do more: practice or research?

Do you feel that one is more important than the other?

What values and ethics are important on your Path and in your practice?

What sort of cycles do you feel your practice goes through?

What is one of the greatest obstacles or struggles you have had to over come?

How do you see yourself practicing in ten years?

How do you incorporate your practice into your life?

Has walking your Path changed you as a person?

Do you consider yourself to be a priest/ess? How so?

A witch? How so?

A shaman? How so?

Which matters more: getting the vocabulary right or… Continue reading

Are You Scared Yet?

I was wandering around the bloggo-sphere the other day when I came across a blog by someone discussing their frustration with ritual (I honestly forget which blog it was which is too bad or I’d be replying to them!).

They just haven’t gotten “it” … they aren’t feeling “it”. “It” is out of their grasp. They aren’t sure anything is happening. You know what I mean, I don’t have to articulate it anymore than that.

The blogger in question spoke of feeling like they should fake it until they made it, just keep plugging away and going through the motions on the hope that they will have a break through.

On account of my suffering from a mild fever all I have in response mostly comes in the form of questions and ranting. (Read: I am slightly out of my mind right now)

First of all I am no longer a big fan of the fake until you make it system. I worry that by doing so we are training our selves to play pretend. Brains especially like routine, not just in actions but in thought and feeling, so I wonder at the possibility of training the brain to fake… Continue reading

The Flu and Divination

Some awesome questions were posted over at the Wild Geek Hang (the forum) about using pendulums, Ouija boards and what-not and I gave a rather long answers. Since I have the flu they were slightly fevered answers though! Enjoy:

  1. First and foremost, is Ouija as dangerous as common opinion would have me believe? What are the risks involved in using a Ouija board?
  2. Are there any similarities between what I’m looking to do and Ouija in terms of risk?
  3. Are there any specific precautions I need to take when using a board? How different is it from yes/no questions?
  4. Can the pendulum be influenced by other, less benign, spirits?
  5. I’ve heard talk of ‘opening doorways’ – what is it, and is it necessary? I’ve been doing simple yes/no questions without any ritual or faff so far
  6. Is doing this sort of thing without ritual or faff a good idea? Do I need to lay out some sort of protection?
  7. If opening doorways is necessary, how do you do it properly and how do you close it afterwards?
  8. Is there any chance I could get in over my head by doing this? (I accept the possibly, but how severe are we… Continue reading

Perfect Practice

It is common for people interested in home, hearth, garden and kitchen based Crafting to think they aren’t well suited to it. A lot of people get this image in their heads of someone akin to a love child of Martha Stewart and Scott Cunningham. I know myself that I find it hard to read Mrs. B’s blog over at Confessions of a Pagan Soccer Mom and not feel just a little inadequate.

I’ll admit, there have been times where I’ve felt like a failure because I used a blanket that is only for show or put a dish in the microwave that doesn’t go in the microwave. I still don’t understand why people own bowls and plates that are not microwave or dishwasher safe?

Only recently did I discover you’re not supposed to store food items in the refrigerator in the tin cans they came in. I’m still working out how to explain this to my mother, who does that! I’ve often wondered if there a class my mother failed to take me to, as a child, where we are supposed to learn how to tell if something is an antique or if it will clash with the drapes?… Continue reading

Smarty Pants!

You don’t need “Pagan” books to be a smarty-pants Pagan. Most libraries (even small ones) have books on history, mythology, folk lore, archaeology and so forth.

There’s more to being a smarty-pants Pagan than being well read as well.

Its called critical thinking and deep thinking.

How about observation? That’s a good one too!

Here’s an important one: application of knowledge.

And another thing! Thinking for yourself and not doing what a book tells you, but sorting the information and coming to your own conclusions, then trying them out, then back to the drawing board.
The problem is that a couple of books or classes aren’t going to make you an intellectual or a smarty-pants Pagan. That’s the first step on the road.
