Something I am Working On …

… a snippet of the start of something. Raw and unedited.

Abbé Henri Breuil sketched diligently by the dim gas-light, in a high alcove deep within a cave system. What he drew there and in other caves, what theories he later published about his discoveries, would help shape not only modern archaeology but also modern Paganism.

The Abbé was a man obsessed, crawling through narrow passages and scaling walls, only to lie upon the floors of caverns humanity had not set foot upon for thousands of years. All to draw the images he found there within. The most ancient of art in European history called to him. Cave art; depictions of bison and horses, lions and hand prints. And, in only a few instances, images of the human form mingled with that of an animal. The experts call these part-human, part-animal figures therianthropes.

The Trois-Frères cave was just one of many ancient cave systems Breuil would visit in his lifetime. In fact, it is far from the most famous of caves he worked in. Discovered in southern France, the art in this cave dates back to the mid-Magdalenian period of about 14,000 B.C.E. This cave features some 280 engraved images… Continue reading

Ahhh, Yes.

I am going back to school in the spring to start my path to owning a kennel or doggy day care or animal hospice. This last year living in the city with Bren has been a big change from the previous few years living on the farm and working with animals and in rescue. I was digging through old emails looking for something else when I found an email in which I described what it is like to be on a homestead, caring for animals who often had been abused.

It’s a 24-hour job, you have to get up at night or at sunrise or both.

It doesn’t matter if it rains or is 40 below; you still have to do the rounds.

It’s the fact that you can’t just take off camping on the weekend spontaneously, you have to find someone to watch the dogs and trust me, its easier to find a babysitter than a farm sitter.

Its being woken up by barking dogs every morning.

Its skipping meals to make the time to feed animals.

Its blisters and calluses and dirt under the fingernails.

It’s dashing out of the shower to check on barking dogs, every time… Continue reading

Repost: The Struggle

How can finding the right thing to say

Be so simple?

Words drip from their lips

Like flawless pearls

My mouth is full of marbles

*

The right thing to do

Seems as bright and clear as day

As they move gracefully

And with an inborn ease

While I stammer and stumble with each step

*

The right thing to wear and the perfect hair

Adorn their elegant bodies

Complimenting style and finesse

Eyebrows delicately raised in response

To my failed attempts at dignity

*

Did they have mothers

Who were just as refined?

Who taught them manners and propriety

Until it became as natural as breathing?

I cannot help but wonder

If only I had a mother capable of tact

Would I socialize with such

Utter nimbleness?

*

Intelligent conversation

Sails past my ears

Their words never take a wrong turn

As I struggle not to misspeak

To not interrupt or repeat

*

Mindless pleasantries surround me

I struggle to maintain a smile

Grateful that they deign

To tolerate my ineptness

At least for a little while

*

Then I take that inevitable misstep

Exposing my clumsiness

I cringe and shudder

As they cluck their tongues

Gossip behind my… Continue reading

Today’s Rant: Hypocritical Feminists

My Mother and Grandmother’s generations fought hard against men telling them what they can and cannot do with their own bodies. They burned bras and refused to shave their legs. They fought for the right to wear what they wished.

They raised us (my generation and younger) to never let anyone tell them what we can and cannot do with our bodies or what to wear.

But what they really meant was “everyone but them”

Those same women who fought so hard now turn around and snipe and sneer at younger women. They tell us we what we can or cannot do with our bodies, they tell us what we should or should not wear.

Ladies, if you want feminism to be carried forth. If you want that respect you deserve for your efforts. If you want us to listen to what you have to say, then please:

Stop telling us whether or not we should shave our pussies.

Stop telling us we shouldn’t wear short skirts.

Stop telling us we shouldn’t shake our asses on the dance floor.

Stop telling us what kind of sex we should be having with our men.

Stop telling us that a woman who… Continue reading
