A Shout Out to Traditional Witches

Hullo!

I am writing an article (and perhaps a chapter for a book) on the etymology of the word “Hedgewitch”. That is, the history of the term.

While many Trad Witches insist the term “Hedgewitch” was used by Trad Witches before it was popularized as a solitary Wiccan or Kitchenwitch, there seems to be a terrible lack of evidence for this.

If any Trad Witches can point me in the direction of the usage of the term “Hedgewitch and “Hedgerider” in the modern era (I don’t need to be pointed to the Havamal etc, thanks) prior to, or around the time of Rae Beth’s publishing of her famous Wiccan Hedgewitch book in 1990 that would be grand. You’d also be doing a service for the Trad Witch community eh. Basically any indication of those specific terms being used between say 1800 and 1995 is required. I’d rather something other than hearsay and conjecture, such as literary evidence, but am willing to look at personal stories and artwork as well.

You will receive acknowledgement for your contribution of course.

EDITED FOR CLARITY: I am specifically looking for evidence that MODERN Traditional Witches were using the term “Hedgewitch” before 1990.

Thanks!

The Story of Dog

Once upon a time …

Long ago, when the Human race was still young and new to this world Humanity lived in caves and in tents made of wood and animal hides. Humanity had learned to harness the power of fire and to control it. Humanity had learned to kill the other creatures of the Earth and to use their body parts for more than just food. All the other creatures of the Earth had learned to fear Humanity, for Humanity had become a mighty hunter and had begun to range far and wide over the landscape.

Mother Earth loved all her creatures but She loved Humanity best. For through Humanity could She perceive Herself in all Her glory. She could watch the Sun rise through Human eyes; feel the wind blow against Human skin, taste meat and fruit with Human tongue. She could feel what it was to make love, experience the thrill of the hunt and She learned about the fear of death.

That the Mother loved Humanity best also caused the other creatures to fear them. Many creatures learned to run at the sight or smell of Humanity but some did not. Some creatures liked the taste… Continue reading

The Square Peg

I have often thought that

If only I had been born into a tribal society

I would have been given a costume and drum

A place and role in society

And happily spent my life as a shaman serving my community

Instead I am stuck working retail

Moving through Western society as awkwardly

As a square peg jammed into a round hole

And practicing my spirituality behind closed doors

The Tenth

The tenth Rune-spell I did learn

Whilst hanging from the World Tree

Is to gaze deep into the murky night

And spy the Hedgewitches flying high,

Sending their spirits far and wide

I see their true forms,

Though they may shift their shapes

With this Rune-charm that I know,

I can confuse their wandering souls

Then turn them ‘round and send them home

Back into their bodies,

Back within their own skins

And for a time at least, trap them within.
