Altars that Travel

Altars that Travel

Shrine on a String: I have one travel altar is on a string, it is about 8 years old now, and reflect a time when my beliefs were more Wicca based. It is a collection of beads and charms on colored hemp string. There is a stone/crystal bead for each of the elements (or at least a corresponding colour). I have a little pentacle charm, a knife charm, a broom charm, a cauldron charm, a goddess charm and an eye of Ra charm, a feather charm, and a wine glass (chalice) charm. Plus there are also wooden beads in red, blue, yellow and green.

I made it so that when laid in a circle, the green beads with the cauldron and the green agate bead are North. The yellow beads, with the feather and the tiger-eye bead are East. The red beads with the knife (athame) charm and citrine bead are South. And the blue beads with the chalice and the turquoise bead are West. The other charms act as dividers.

Shrine-on-a-strings come in many forms and are great because you can even wear them around your neck or wrist while walking through the woods. I had… Continue reading

A Reality Check on Magick

A Reality Check on Magick

Only YOU are responsible if you bungle a spell and harm yourself or others.

Spells that change the color of your hair, change red traffic lights to green, make you invisible and such DO NOT WORK. This is not Hollywood.

Spells that force a person to act or feel against their own free will rarely work, and when they do, they always wear off. There is also a high price to be paid for such spells, so think twice.

If you think you have been cursed or some such thing, chances are you HAVE NOT been cursed, you’re just having a run of bad luck.

Start small and work towards the big stuff.

Use your common sense.

Make sure that any work you do is worth any backlash you may receive.

Choose your words carefully.

Magick is a not cure-all for your life’s problems.

Magick takes a lot of energy out of you; it is not advisable to cast spells while ill or tired.

Energy work, such as working with tarot cards or casting spells, can be very wearing on your natural reserves, try not to over do it.

Bragging about how powerful you are… Continue reading

A Few Things That can be Damaging to Your Growth on Your Path

A Few Things That can be Damaging to Your Growth on Your Path

Expecting everything to be easy

Believing everything you see, hear or read.

Lacking critical thinking skills

Lack of respect for Nature, magick, Gods, sprits etc

Looking for shortcuts rather than paying your dues

Dishonesty, especially with yourself or any teacher you may have

Laziness

Depending entirely on other’s work and research

The belief that whatever path you are on is the only right one, not only is this damaging to yourself, but it can be harmful to others. It also does not leave you open to growing and changing on your path.

Arrogance, hubris & delusions of grandeur

Being overly judgmental

Failure to admit to your mistakes, or learn from them

Lack of commitment

Not setting goals, or setting unreasonable goals

Impatience, rushing headlong into things

Willful ignorance

Worrying about what everyone else thinks, or what they are doing

Lack of faith

Lack of personal responsibility

Lack of self-control/will power

Competition with others, every spiritual path is unique to each individual

Baggage from the past, especially any baggage from a previous religion or spirituality

Narrow-mindedness

Faking it

Hallmarks of a Hedgewitch

So if we strip Hedgecraft right down to its basic elements, what makes a Hedgewitch a Hedgewitch?

The basic fundamentals of Hedgecraft would be (in my humble opinion):

A deep respect, even reverence, for Nature and the Earth

The practice of folk (low) magick

Shamanic practice, such as soul flight and journeying in the otherworlds

The use of trance inducing herbs is a very traditional part of Hedgecraft (and possibly the oldest tradition within Hedgecraft) When hedgewitches do use such practices, it is common to do so with a friend or group to keep an eye on them.

The practice of some form of healing (herbalism, crystal healing, massage therapy, midwifery, shamanic etc)

Being drawn to the borders between civilization and the wild, a love for rural and/or natural places.

Wildcrafting & Wortcunning. Magickal herbalism

Being something of an outsider or misfit, or just a different or eclectic personality

A simple, practical and individualized style of ritual and spellwork that is spontaneous and Nature inspired

Working with (or working for) plants and/or animals

A (usually) solitary or family-based practice that is community-minded

Working with Nature spirits and other entities such as ancestor spirits, elementals, totems etc

Blending both old and… Continue reading
